In 1935, Detroit was the City of Champions. The City had all three of the major sports league Champions in Football, Baseball, and Hockey… But Detroit also boasted Olympic Gold Medals, Champions in 5 other sports, and the pound for pound #1 Fighter in the World, Joe Louis.
All roads to greatness in the sport of boxing come through the City of Detroit.
From Jack Blackburn and the Brown Bomber to the current Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury, every era of boxing has had Detroit’s fingerprints on it. Detroiters Eddie Futch and Emanuel Steward trained 61 world champions by themselves. Add their disciples like Freddie Roach and adopted sons like Jake LaMotta and Sugar Ray Robinson, and the legacy becomes epic.
